Tunnettu guru ja tietokantakirjoittaja Toon Koppelaars esittää mielenkiintoiset näkeymksensä tietokantojen eheydestä perustuen vankkaan teoriaan.
Englanninkielinen kurssi. Kurssiin kuuluu luennoitsijan kirja "Applied Mathematics for Database Professionals" , Lex de Haan and Toon Koppelaars.
Kurssi järjestetään yhteistyössä Miracle Finland Oy:n kanssa.
This seminar is based on the recently published book "Applied Mathematics for Database Professionals" by Lex de Haan and Toon Koppelaars. The seminar will consist of three parts (each taking approximately 2 to 2.5 hours).
Part 1: The Mathematics.
The relational model of data is founded on two mathematical disciplines: set theory and logic. In this part of the seminar we'll cover those parts of set theory and logic that are both necessary and sufficient to formally deal with a database design and its integrity constraints. The important concept of 'rewrite rules' will also be introduced in this part.
Part 2: Specifying queries and data integrity constraints in a mathematical way.
In this part we'll demonstrate the application of these formal disciplines. We will introduce you to an example database design and demonstrate how queries and data integrity constraints can formally be specified. We'll also talk about why you would want to do this.
Part 3: Implementing data integrity constraints using an SQL DBMS (Oracle).
In this part we'll point out the poor (declarative) support of integrity constraints in today's SQL DBMS's. Implementing data integrity can be a tough job, especially when constraints must consider multiple tuples. We'll demonstrate a method, based on database triggers, to implement these constraints procedurally.
The seminar is aimed primarily at technical specialists, not managers, though managers should benefit from it too. Attendees will be expected to be professionally interested in database design and implementation. Thus, the target audience includes but is not limited to:
- DBMS designers, implementers, and other vendor personnel
- Database consultants
- Data and database administrators
- Information modelers and database designers
- Database application designers and implementers
- Data warehouse personnel
- Computer science professors specializing in database matters
- Database students, both graduate and undergraduate
- People responsible for DBMS product evaluation and acquisition
On completion of this seminar, attendees will:
- have a clear understanding of how mathematics underpins every relational database design
- be able to use sound principles in designing and using (ie. querying) relational databases
- have a clear understanding of how mathematics underpins every relational database design
- be able to deal with data integrity constraints (business rules) in a professional manner
- have an overview of the deficiencies in the area of constraint support in an SQL DBMS (Oracle)
Attendees will receive a workbook containing a copy of the speaker's slides.
They will also receive a copy of the book 'Applied Mathematics for Database Professionals' by Lex de Haan and Toon Koppelaars.
Kurssi sisältää aamu- ja iltapäiväkahvit sekä lounaat.
